Tekken: Anna Williams

I've been a fan of the Tekken series of games since I was a kid, so I was feeling nostalgic and decided to paint one of my favourite characters since childhood, Anna Williams.

Tekken has a cosmopolitan cast from all over the globe, including the Irish Williams sisters, Nina and Anna. I personally prefer playing as (and drawing) Anna because she's a bit less dour and serious than Nina, and wears some fabulously outrageous outfits. What's great about Anna is that she doesn't fall into any common Irish stereotypes, and holds her own against some of the world's greatest martial artists while wearing six-inch heels. A true inspiration!

Character Design Sketches

I've always been really interested in character design, and recently I kind of figured out I'm not as horrible as I thought I was at it. I don't really have much self-confidence, and since going to college I've become less and less trusting of my own judgement. I generally think I can't tell the difference between what's good and what's bad - but apparently, I'm not that awful at character designs.
So I thought I'd share some sketches with you, designing characters from novels. These are from some novels I really like - I have odd taste in movies and books. I try not to talk about them too often because of this! But hey, I thought I might share these with you anyway:

I've been so busy lately, but sometimes I get ideas that I just have get onto paper, so I stayed up late drawing these out.
I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of novels, as they have such colourful characters. It's an exciting challenge to try to get them on paper:

A quick doodle of Jack Spicer:

He was from Xiaolin Showdown - a show that was on when I was around 14, which I really liked. It was the first animated show I had seen where they had a main character (Kimiko) in a new outfit every episode, sometimes going through a few different ones per episode. That impressed me.

The designs in the show were quite eye-catching,  and I especially like Jack's design - it really made him stand out.

With college being so busy, it seems I have less time to draw in my spare time, but I still managed to squeeze this one in!

Queenie

Blackadder is one of my favourite sitcom series, and here I've done a small tribute to one of its most memorable characters, Queenie:

To me, Miranda Richardson will always be the definitive Elizabeth I.

  Here I experimented with detailed clothing: the embellishments on her dress were all part of her original costume on the show, to get that authentic feeling. 

I also wanted to give the piece an old-portrait-style feel.

If I were a superhero, I'd probably be along the lines of Squirrel Girl  - because of my ability to communicate with small rodents and break the fourth wall, naturally.

Adventure Fantasy Fanart

I enjoy drawing fan art in my spare time, I use it to try out drawing well-known characters in different styles and such.

Here are some of my recent experiments, in which I tried to draw groups of characters who all look  different from one another:

Below is the main cast of Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time With Finn & Jake. It's one of my favourite shows to come out of Cartoon Network in the past while {others being The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and The Regular Show}. Adventure Time really captured my imagination, probably because I'm a fan of the fantasy adventure genre in general.   
Also, the character designs are awesome.

In the show, the characters are drawn with somewhat simplified faces, so here I tried drawing them in a slightly more detailed cartoon style, giving each distinct facial features:

Speaking of fantasy adventures, anyone who knows me knows that I love the Final Fantasy game series. (Though I must admit I never got into the games after X in a serious way)
There's just something about the earlier games in the series that appeal to me - probably because of the high wackiness content and period settings - they're more in the same vein as Adventure Time and D&D than the newer, more futuristic games. 

IX is one of my personal favourites for its somewhat Shakespearean setting and completely insane character designs. A lot of people didn't like it because it was more cartoony than its immediate predecessors, but I actually liked the cartooniness.

Below is my rendition of the Magus Sisters, a quirky miniboss squad from Final Fantasy IV.
For some reason they appear as giant bug ladies in Final Fantasy X, so I kind of mixed and matched elements of each incarnation together:

These both were loose pencil sketches that I scanned in and painted in Ye Olde Photoshoppe - I've been keeping a little of the sketchy quality in deliberately lately, I just like it better that way for some reason.
